Bill Callahan
Coming from the American indie scene, Bill Callahan has made his mark since the early 1990s with a distinctive songwriting voice that sits between folk, slow rock and minimalist Americana. Born in 1966 in Silver Spring, Maryland, he first became known as Smog through a series of lo-fi records with a pared-down aesthetic released on various independent labels. From 2007 onward he has released music under his own name, refining a songwriter style characterized by a deep voice, speech-like phrasing and highly narrative lyrics often focused on intimate relationships, rural landscapes and everyday gestures. Albums such as Woke on a Whaleheart (2007), Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle (2009), Apocalypse (2011) and Dream River (2013) place him in a register where discreet arrangements, spare guitars and touches of country create a contemplative atmosphere. With Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest (2019), Gold Record (2020) and Ytilaer (2022), Callahan extends this approach in expansive formats, with precise imagery and a restrained delivery, while firmly situating himself in the North American folk and indie constellation through regular touring and collaborations with other musicians of his generation.
