Info

Bill Callahan comes to SPOT/De Oosterpoort in Groningen on October 11, 2026. The American songwriter has built his own world since the 1990s, first as Smog with sparse lo‑fi recordings, later under his own name. His deep voice and half‑spoken phrasing carry stories that stay close: relationships, rural settings, small gestures that linger. Musically he moves between folk, slow‑burn rock and pared‑down Americana; guitar, spare arrangements and plenty of breathing room.

From Woke on a Whaleheart and Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle he refined that approach, followed by Apocalypse and Dream River—records that demonstrate how a few sounds are enough to paint a scene. Recent albums such as Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, Gold Record and Ytilaer continue that trajectory with longer forms and sharp detail. Live, it’s not about volume but about timing, lyrics and delivery: songs that open slowly, a line that shifts, a melody that keeps circling. In Groningen Callahan draws on three decades of material, from his Smog period to the present, and shows how little is needed for a story to land.
