Info
Bill Callahan will play Melkweg in Amsterdam on 10 October 2026. For three decades the American songwriter has been forging his own path between folk, slow rock and stripped-down Americana. He broke through as Smog, with lo-fi records that left the rough edges intact, and has released music under his own name since 2007. His low voice, parlando-style phrasing and eye for detail shape songs rooted in intimate relationships, rural settings and small everyday gestures.
On Woke on a Whaleheart and Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle he adopts a restrained, melodic approach; with Apocalypse and Dream River he carries this forward in arrangements that leave room for silence and reflection. Recent albums such as Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, Gold Record and Ytilaer open up longer forms and precise imagery, without relinquishing the simplicity of guitar, bass and sparse keyboards.
On stage Callahan lets time do its work: lyrics unfold more spoken than sung, melodies breathe, and every nuance in voice and string carries weight. The set moves through his catalogue, from early Smog echoes to the open sound of recent years, supported by a band that keeps the contours clear and leaves the stories close to the skin.
