Lambchop
Around singer‑songwriter Kurt Wagner, Lambchop took shape in Nashville, Tennessee, in the late 1980s, initially under the name Posterchild, before evolving over the years into a collective with a shifting lineup. Early on associated with alt‑country and indie rock, Lambchop quickly developed a broader songwriting approach in which country, mellow soul, chamber pop and a taste for brass and keyboard arrangements coexist with a frequently restrained vocal delivery and a deliberately flexible tempo. This progression is evident across a steady discography, from I Hope You’re Sitting Down/Jack’s Tulips (1994) to Nixon (2000), Is a Woman (2002), Mr. M (2012), FLOTUS (2016), This (Is What I Wanted to Tell You) (2019), Showtunes (2021) and The Bible (2022). Long associated with the Merge label, Lambchop also accompanied Vic Chesnutt on The Salesman and Bernadette in 1998. Over time, Lambchop shifted its center of gravity toward more minimalist and sometimes more electronic forms, without abandoning the melodic songwriting and everyday observation that underpin Kurt Wagner’s work.
