The Strokes

Formed in New York in 1998, The Strokes bring together Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, Albert Hammond Jr., Nikolai Fraiture and Fabrizio Moretti in a quintet that first emerged on Manhattan’s club scene, between the Mercury Lounge and the Luna Lounge. The Strokes established themselves in the early 2000s with a dry, taut rock sound at the crossroads of indie rock, garage rock revival and post-punk revival, built on interwoven guitars, a direct rhythm section and often detached vocals. The EP The Modern Age, released in 2001, preceded the album Is This It (2001), followed by Room on Fire (2003) and First Impressions of Earth (2006), which continued this concise, nervous songwriting while expanding the band’s melodic range. After a pause, The Strokes returned with Angles (2011) and Comedown Machine (2013), where new wave and synth-pop elements became more apparent. The band released the EP Future Present Past in 2016, before returning with the album The New Abnormal (2020), produced by Rick Rubin. Alongside members’ individual projects, The Strokes remain associated with major rock stages and international festivals while retaining a strong connection to their New York identity.
