Pixies
Born in Boston in 1986, the Pixies formed around Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and David Lovering, and quickly redefined the codes of alternative rock with their explosive blend of immediate melodies, abrasive breaks, and deliberately disorienting songwriting. Surfer Rosa and then Doolittle established their singular grammar—quiet-loud dynamics, surreal imagery, razor-edged riffs, and a knack for sonic collage that would become a major inspiration for Nirvana, Radiohead, and Weezer. Buoyed by songs like Where Is My Mind?, Debaser, and Monkey Gone to Heaven, they became a pillar of the American underground before splitting in 1993. Their 2004 reunion set them on a renewed long-term path, marked by new albums and an evolving lineup centered on Black Francis, Santiago, and Lovering. Still a fixture on major international stages, the Pixies champion a body of work that has profoundly reshaped how independent rock is written, produced, and heard.
