The Bug

Born in the UK, Kevin Martin developed The Bug between Weymouth, where he grew up, and London, which he moved to around the turn of the 1990s, before settling on the European continent. Under this name, The Bug operates at a dense crossroads of dub, dancehall, hip‑hop, grime, noise and electronic music, marked by a taste for massive bass, jolting rhythms and MC voices set against abrasive textures. The project first appeared on Tapping The Conversation in 1997, then conceived with DJ Vadim in a more downtempo/trip‑hop vein, and hardened with Pressure in 2003, Killing Sound in 2006 and London Zoo in 2008 — an album that more clearly positioned The Bug within the intersections of reggae soundsystem, dubstep and the British experimental scene. Angels & Devils was released in 2014, followed notably by Concrete Desert with Earth in 2017, In Blue with Dis Fig in 2020, Fire in 2021 and Machine in 2024. In parallel, Kevin Martin has led or co‑founded several important projects, including GOD, Techno Animal, Ice, Pressure and King Midas Sound. Over the years The Bug has also relied on vocal collaborations with Flowdan, Warrior Queen, Killa P, Daddy Freddy and Miss Red, in a format designed as much for live performance as for the clash logic of the soundsystem.
