Kode9

Born in Glasgow in 1973 as Steve Goodman, Kode9 developed between Scotland and England, initially working as a DJ in the 1990s before settling in London, where he helped shape the emerging garage, grime and dubstep scenes around FWD>> and Rinse FM. His work sits at the intersection of early dubstep, UK bass, British soundsystem culture, jungle and 2-step, characterized by deep bass, angular rhythms and spare electronic textures. In parallel Kode9 established the Hyperdub label, founded in 2004, which has released both his own productions and those of artists connected to the transformations of British electronic music. A significant portion of his discography is linked to MC The Spaceape, with whom Kode9 released the albums Memories of the Future (2006) and Black Sun (2011), a collaboration where dark spoken word and minimalist production answer one another. As a solo artist Kode9 continued this exploration with Nothing in 2015, followed by Astro-Darien and Escapology in 2022. Kode9 also pursued an academic path in philosophy and published the essay Sonic Warfare in 2009, a work that illuminates the theoretical dimension of his music.
