Loefah

Under the name Loefah, Peter Livingston has developed since the early 2000s an approach to dubstep that originated in Croydon, south London, at a time when the British scene was steering UK garage toward slower, heavier and more stripped-down forms. Early ties to the DMZ circle and the Brixton nights with Digital Mystikz helped define him; Loefah made his mark with a minimal, dark sound built on massive bass, sparse rhythms and vocal motifs pared down to the essentials. This aesthetic runs through his early maxis on labels such as Big Apple, DMZ and Tectonic, as well as collaborations with Mala, Coki, Skream, Pinch and Roska. His presence on Mary Anne Hobbs’s programme Dubstep Warz also accompanied the scene’s spread beyond its initial circle. From the late 2000s Loefah broadened his scope by founding the Swamp 81 label in 2009, initially rooted in dubstep but quickly opening up to a wider spectrum of British bass music, notably after Addison Groove’s “Footcrab.” As a DJ, producer and curator, Loefah remains committed to a restrained, physical approach focused on rhythmic impact.
