The Beta Band
Formed in St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, The Beta Band came together in 1996 around Steve Mason and Gordon Anderson before settling as a quartet with Robin Jones, John Maclean and Richard Greentree. They developed a songwriting approach that blended indie rock, psychedelic folk, electronica, trip-hop and post-rock, often assembled collage-style between oblique pop songs, slow grooves and experimental textures. The group first drew attention with three EPs — Champion Versions (1997), The Patty Patty Sound and Los Amigos del Beta Bandidos (both 1998) — which were compiled the same year as The Three E.P.’s. Their studio albums The Beta Band (1999), Hot Shots II (2001) and Heroes to Zeros (2004) document a shift from a very loose form toward tighter structures without abandoning their taste for the off-kilter. In the early 2000s The Beta Band toured the UK and internationally, notably alongside Radiohead. The band split in 2004 amid financial difficulties, and its members moved on to side projects such as The Aliens and Steve Mason’s solo career. The Beta Band reformed in 2025 for a series of concerts in the UK and North America.
