Super Furry Animals
Formed in Cardiff in 1993, Super Furry Animals belong to the Welsh scene of the 1990s as a quintet centred on Gruff Rhys, Huw Bunford, Guto Pryce, Cian Ciaran and Dafydd Ieuan, after an initial stint with Rhys Ifans on vocals. Super Furry Animals developed early on a songwriting approach that blends alternative rock, indie rock, power pop, psychedelia, electronica and pop experimentation, freely switching between Welsh and English. After the Welsh EPs of 1995, the band reached a wider audience with Fuzzy Logic in 1996 and Radiator in 1997, before further expanding their range with Guerrilla in 1999 and Mwng in 2000, an album recorded entirely in Welsh. The rest of their discography confirms this taste for constant movement, from Rings Around the World (2001) to Phantom Power (2003), Love Kraft (2005), Hey Venus! (2007) and Dark Days/Light Years (2009), where contributors include Paul McCartney and later Nick McCarthy. For a long time Super Furry Animals cultivated a very melodic pop format while incorporating sound collages, electronic rhythms, vocal harmonies and rougher detours. After a break beginning in 2010, the band reunited sporadically between 2015 and 2016, and announced a further return to the stage in 2026.
