Spiritualized

Born in Rugby, Warwickshire, Spiritualized formed in 1990 around Jason Pierce, after the end of Spacemen 3, with an initial lineup that included several former members of that group. Over the years, Spiritualized has mostly functioned as a Pierce-centered project, surrounded by varying musicians depending on tours and recordings. Spiritualized's music blends space rock, psychedelic rock, shoegaze, blues, gospel and soul, with a marked taste for repetitive textures, drones, contrasts between sparseness and orchestral arrangements, and songs often built on simple forms stretched over time. After the early 1990s' first singles, Spiritualized released Lazer Guided Melodies in 1992, followed by Pure Phase in 1995, two records that establish this blend of hypnotic repetition, saturated guitars and suspended melodies. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space in 1997 further broadens the framework with clearer influences of gospel and orchestral music. Let It Come Down appeared in 2001, followed by Amazing Grace in 2003, more direct in its rock approach. After Songs in A&E in 2008, Spiritualized returned with Sweet Heart Sweet Light in 2012, And Nothing Hurt in 2018, and Everything Was Beautiful in 2022. Present in both indie rock circuits and on major festival stages, Spiritualized has also shared the bill with groups like Depeche Mode in the early 1990s.
