Primal Scream
Formed in Glasgow in 1982 around Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie, Primal Scream first belonged to the mid-1980s British indie scene with a jangle-pop, psychedelic sound heard on Sonic Flower Groove (1987), before turning toward a rockier style on Primal Scream (1989). The band’s identity was redefined at the turn of the 1990s by incorporating acid house, dub, gospel and club culture, notably through Andrew Weatherall’s input on Screamadelica (1991), a landmark album that blends rock, dance and electronic textures. Primal Scream later shifted again to rock-soul and blues on Give Out But Don’t Give Up (1994), then to darker, motoric and cinematic songwriting on Vanishing Point (1997). Collaborations with Martin Duffy, Denise Johnson, Kevin Shields and Gary “Mani” Mounfield have accompanied this ongoing evolution. XTRMNTR (2000) and Evil Heat (2002) amplified the abrasive side—electro-rock, dub and industrial tension—while Riot City Blues (2006), More Light (2013), Chaosmosis (2016) and Come Ahead (2024) continued the band’s restless trajectory. Still led by Bobby Gillespie, with Andrew Innes and Darrin Mooney at the core of the current lineup, Primal Scream alternates between rock stages and festivals, maintaining a shifting aesthetic of guitars, danceable rhythms and psychedelic heritage.
