Mercury Rev

Formed in the late 1980s in Buffalo, New York, Mercury Rev initially made a name for themselves in an experimental vein close to noise rock and indie rock before evolving toward a psychedelic, orchestral pop style. Centered on Jonathan Donahue and guitarist Grasshopper, Mercury Rev developed a sound characterized by high, piercing vocals, string and brass arrangements, and atmospheric textures that align them with dream pop and film music. Their early albums, Yerself Is Steam (1991) and Boces (1993), document a more abrasive, dissonant phase, while See You on the Other Side (1995) begins a shift toward more melodic songwriting. With Deserter’s Songs (1998) and All Is Dream (2001), the band refined a language where orchestrated ballads, folk influences, and psychedelia coexist, allowing them to move between American and European independent scenes. The long-standing collaboration with producer and former member David Fridmann has been instrumental in shaping this detailed, frequently described-as-cinematic sound. On subsequent records — including The Secret Migration (2005), Snowflake Midnight (2008), The Light in You (2015) and the covers album Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete Revisited (2019) — Mercury Rev continued to explore atmospheres, alongside occasional film projects and tours in which their repertoire is regularly rearranged.
