The Flaming Lips
Formed in Oklahoma City in 1983 around Wayne Coyne and Michael Ivins, The Flaming Lips initially operated within a garage-punk and noise-pop register before quickly expanding their language toward psychedelic, alternative and experimental rock where pop melodies coexist with sound collages, electronic textures and often offbeat songwriting. After an initial series of records on independent labels, including Hear It Is (1986), Oh My Gawd!!! (1987) and In a Priest Driven Ambulance (1990), The Flaming Lips gained visibility with Transmissions from the Satellite Heart (1993) and the single "She Don’t Use Jelly". The second half of the 1990s marked a new turning point with Zaireeka (1997), a project conceived for multiple simultaneous sound sources, and then with The Soft Bulletin (1999), where the band refined a more orchestral and melodic sound. This evolution continued on Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002), then on At War with the Mystics (2006), Embryonic (2009), The Terror (2013), Oczy Mlody (2017) and American Head (2020). Long structured around the duo Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd, The Flaming Lips also developed a strong stage identity, between immersive setups, headphone concerts and bubble performances during the Covid period.
