Belle and Sebastian

Born in the mid-1990s in Glasgow, Scotland, Belle and Sebastian formed around Stuart Murdoch’s songs within the local indie scene, expanding into a lineup that includes Stevie Jackson, Chris Geddes, Richard Colburn and Sarah Martin. Rooted in an indie pop and chamber pop aesthetic, the band combines understated melodies, string and brass arrangements, and strongly narrative songwriting close to folk and 1960s pop. Their early albums, Tigermilk (1996) and If You’re Feeling Sinister (1996), circulated initially in independent circles before putting Belle and Sebastian on the map of British pop, followed by The Boy with the Arab Strap (1998) and Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant (2000), which continued their focus on character studies and everyday vignettes. The group then moved toward a more produced sound with Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003) and The Life Pursuit (2006), recorded with producers from the British pop world, and later incorporated more electronic and dance influences on Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance (2015). Alongside soundtracks (Storytelling, 2002), EP compilations and regular tours across Europe and North America, Belle and Sebastian remain associated with intimate, detailed songwriting often centered on Glasgow and its social milieu.
