Mogwai
Formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in the mid‑1990s around Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison and Martin Bulloch, later joined by Barry Burns, Mogwai are part of the British post‑rock movement with a focus on instrumental music. From Mogwai Young Team (1997) and Come On Die Young (1999) the band established a style built on long developments, marked contrasts between silence and saturation, minimalist guitar‑led melodies and a measured use of electronics. Across albums such as Rock Action (2001), Mr Beast (2006), Rave Tapes (2014) and Every Country’s Sun (2017), Mogwai evolved their language toward increasingly detailed textures, incorporating keyboards, loops and atmospheres close to film music. This direction also led them to composing for screen, with soundtracks for the film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (2006), the series Les Revenants (2013) and the documentary Atomic (2016), as well as occasional collaborations with other film composers. Active on the international independent scene and a regular presence at festivals, the Scottish group releases most of its recordings on its own label, Rock Action Records, and pursues an activity in which amplified concerts and music‑for‑screen projects occupy an equivalent place in Mogwai’s sonic identity.
