Stereolab
Formed in London in 1990 around guitarist Tim Gane (formerly of McCarthy) and Franco‑British singer Lætitia Sadier, Stereolab developed an aesthetic that fused experimental pop, krautrock, easy listening and minimal electronics. The band’s core, regularly augmented by various musicians—including Australian singer‑guitarist Mary Hansen until 2002—operated as a fluid collective rooted in the British independent scene. Early recordings were released on the Too Pure label; the group later founded Duophonic and also worked with Elektra to distribute albums such as “Peng!” (1992), “Transient Random‑Noise Bursts with Announcements” (1993), “Mars Audiac Quintet” (1994) and “Emperor Tomato Ketchup” (1996), followed by “Dots and Loops” (1997), “Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night” (1999), “Sound‑Dust” (2001), “Margerine Eclipse” (2004), “Fab Four Suture” (2006), “Chemical Chords” (2008) and “Not Music” (2010). Stereolab’s sound rests on repetitive motifs, rhythms drawing on 1970s German rock, clear vocal harmonies and song structures that blend pop melody, jazz influences and orchestrated arrangements, with lyrics in French and English that weave political reference, science fiction and retro‑futurist imagery. After a break announced in 2009, Stereolab resumed live performances and reissue work beginning in 2019.
