Rayland Baxter
Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Rayland Baxter has since the early 2010s developed a songwriting voice that sits between Americana, alternative country, folk-rock and light psychedelic pop, with songs in which acoustic guitar, supple arrangements and a voice that is often relaxed take center stage. Son of musician Bucky Baxter, Rayland Baxter began to attract attention after a stint on Caitlin Rose's 'Shanghai Cigarettes' in 2010, then released the album Feathers & Fishhooks in 2012 and the EP Ashkelon in 2013. His career then solidified with Imaginary Man in 2015, where his songwriting remains folk-based while opening to dreamier textures, followed by Wide Awake in 2018, marked by a more pop and expansive approach. In 2019, Rayland Baxter released Good Mmornin, a covers album of Mac Miller songs, before returning to his own compositions with If I Were a Butterfly in 2022. Habituated to indie, folk and Americana circuits in the US as well as Europe, Rayland Baxter evolves his music without breaks, mixing calm melodies, country inflections and hushed production, in a register that remains faithful to the song while leaving space for more psychedelic and soulful colors.
