Solstafir
Born in the mid‑1990s out of Reykjavík’s extreme metal scene, Sólstafir — sometimes spelled Solstafir — started in a style close to black metal before gradually moving toward a blend of post‑metal, atmospheric rock and post‑rock influences. Founded around singer‑guitarist Aðalbjörn Tryggvason, the band developed from its earliest demos and the EP “Til Valhallar” (1996) a strong imagery tied to Icelandic landscapes, which remains a guiding thread in Sólstafir’s music. The first album, “Í Blóði og Anda,” appeared in 2002, followed by “Masterpiece of Bitterness” (2005) and “Köld” (2009), marking longer formats, an increasing presence of vocals in Icelandic and a move toward more melodic rock harmonies. With “Svartir Sandar” (2011) and “Ótta” (2014) the group refined a style dominated by slow, tension‑building guitars, misty atmospheres and stretched rhythms, sitting at the border between progressive metal and alternative rock. The albums “Berdreyminn” (2017) and “Endless Twilight of Codependent Love” (2020) continued this evolution, working more explicitly with contrasts between intimate passages and denser sections. Very active live, Sólstafir has made a name for itself on European and North American stages, from metal‑focused clubs to mainstream festivals, delivering performances centered on long, immersive tracks that distill the Icelandic band’s distinctive aesthetic.
