Paula Cole

Born in Rockport, Massachusetts, Paula Cole rose to prominence in the 1990s with a singer-songwriter style that blends pop, rock and folk, driven by a full, rich voice and a marked taste for contrasts between intimate acoustic moments and denser arrangements. Trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she studied jazz and improvisation, Paula Cole first drew attention as a vocalist on Peter Gabriel's Secret World Tour in 1993–1994, an experience that gave her international visibility before the release of Harbinger in 1994. She then broadened her audience with This Fire in 1996, an album she produced herself and which includes, notably, Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? and I Don’t Want to Wait. Appearing on the Lilith Fair stage toward the end of the decade, Paula Cole then evolved her repertoire with Amen in 1999, more focused on social and political themes, then took a break before returning with Courage in 2007 and Ithaca in 2010. The rest of her career sees her alternating between original records and more cross-disciplinary projects, from Raven in 2013 to Ballads in 2017, then Revolution in 2019 and American Quilt in 2021, where she revisits the American musical heritage. With Lo in 2024, Paula Cole continues an independent trajectory, at the crossroads of author-pop, folk-rock and jazz inflections.
