Macy Gray
Born in Canton, Ohio, in 1967, Macy Gray emerged on the American soul and R&B scene in the late 1990s with a distinctive raspy voice and songwriting that blends introspective ballads with funk- and pop-tinged tracks. She reached international recognition with the album “On How Life Is” (1999), which established a style navigating between soul, neo-soul and pop, followed by “The Id” (2001) and “The Trouble with Being Myself” (2003), where rock and hip‑hop elements became more apparent. She continued with “Big” (2007) and “The Sellout” (2010), explored covers on “Covered” (2012) and paid tribute to Stevie Wonder with “Talking Book” (2012). From “The Way” (2014) and especially “Stripped” (2016), Macy Gray moved closer to jazz, working with more stripped-down formats, before returning to a soul sound colored by pop and funk on “Ruby” (2018). In 2022, the project “The Reset,” credited to Macy Gray & The California Jet Club, reflects a more collective approach around contemporary soul. Alongside her recordings, Macy Gray has also appeared regularly in film and television, reinforcing her image as an artist at the intersection of soul, R&B and American pop culture.
