Alanis Morissette

Between teen pop and alternative rock, Alanis Morissette’s career exemplifies a notable shift from the Canadian scene to international prominence. Born in 1974 in Ottawa, the singer‑songwriter first attracted attention in the early 1990s with two dance‑pop albums released in Canada, Alanis (1991) and Now Is the Time (1992). Moving to Los Angeles marked a new phase: together with producer Glen Ballard she recorded Jagged Little Pill (1995), a seminal record featuring rough‑edged guitars, introspective songwriting and a highly expressive vocal delivery. Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998) and Under Rug Swept (2002) continued this trajectory—blending post‑grunge influences with melodic pop—while Flavors of Entanglement (2008), made with Guy Sigsworth, introduced more atmospheric textures. With Havoc and Bright Lights (2012) and Such Pretty Forks in the Road (2020) she further explored themes of relationships, motherhood and spirituality, adopting a calmer aesthetic still centered on voice and lyrics. Since the mid‑1990s Morissette has performed across North America and Europe, alternating full‑band electric tours with more intimate shows and occasional forays into film, television and musical theatre, notably the stage adaptation of Jagged Little Pill.
