Pulp

Formed in Sheffield, UK, in the late 1970s around singer‑songwriter Jarvis Cocker, Pulp underwent several transformations before establishing its identity within the British indie scene. Their early recordings — including the album It (1983) and Freaks (1987) — retain a post‑punk atmosphere and were accompanied by frequent line‑up changes, while Separations (1992) introduced synthpop elements and rhythms drawn from dance music. With His ’n’ Hers (1994) and Different Class (1995), Pulp became central to the britpop movement, combining melodic pop with glam and disco influences and lyrics that portray English urban milieus, everyday life and class relations. This Is Hardcore (1998) emphasized a darker, more cinematic tone, before We Love Life — produced by Scott Walker in 2001 — steered the band toward a more organic approach with orchestral arrangements. Alternating between active periods and lengthy hiatuses, Pulp has regularly returned to the stage since the 2010s, focusing on concerts in the UK and Europe while remaining associated with Sheffield’s musical history and a songwriting approach in which social observation is central.
