The Waterboys
Led from its beginnings by Scottish singer-songwriter Mike Scott, The Waterboys formed in 1983 in London and initially developed a broad, melodic rock sound influenced by the British alternative scene of the early 1980s. The early albums The Waterboys (1983), A Pagan Place (1984) and This Is the Sea (1985) established the band around a sound often described as powerful and expansive, where electric guitars and keyboards sit alongside lyrics of a spiritual and poetic bent. In the late 1980s, following the arrival of violinist Steve Wickham and the group’s anchoring in Ireland, The Waterboys shifted toward a folk-rock style with strong Celtic colours, exemplified by Fisherman’s Blues (1988) and Room to Roam (1990), blending acoustic songs, traditional Irish influences and rural blues. Over the decades the lineup remained flexible around Mike Scott, with a variable personnel and swings between electric rock, intimate folk and more soul-tinged ballads on albums such as Dream Harder (1993), A Rock in the Weary Land (2000) and Universal Hall (2003). The Waterboys continued to explore songwriting that fuses rock, folk and literature — notably with An Appointment with Mr Yeats (2011) — and then released Modern Blues (2015), Out of All This Blue (2017), Where the Action Is (2019), Good Luck, Seeker (2020) and All Souls Hill (2022), while maintaining a steady touring presence across the UK, Europe and North America.
