Manic Street Preachers

Formed in Blackwood in south Wales in 1986, Manic Street Preachers started within a punk rock and glam aesthetic that quickly broadened into a taut, melodic and literate alternative rock, blending razor guitars, pop-rock choruses and a post-punk heritage. The band reached its definitive line-up with James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire, Sean Moore and Richey Edwards, who co-wrote the lyrics until his disappearance in 1995; thereafter Manic Street Preachers carried on as a trio. The early records — Generation Terrorists (1992), Gold Against the Soul (1993) and especially The Holy Bible (1994) — established a world marked by political, social and cultural concerns, with dense, confrontational songwriting. After that turning point the band moved toward broader formats on Everything Must Go (1996) and This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours (1998), two central albums in their trajectory and in the context of Cool Cymru. Subsequent releases alternate between political urgency, introspection and a taste for wider arrangements on Know Your Enemy (2001), Lifeblood (2004), Send Away the Tigers (2007), Journal for Plague Lovers (2009) — built from lyrics left by Edwards — and later The Ultra Vivid Lament (2021) and Critical Thinking (2025). On stage, Manic Street Preachers have navigated large venues, British festivals and international tours while maintaining a strong Welsh identity, and have collaborated with artists such as Traci Lords, Nina Persson and Ian McCulloch.
