Tommy Genesis
Active on the international rap scene since the mid-2010s, Tommy Genesis has developed an aesthetic that sits between experimental hip hop, trap and electronic pop. Born Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj in Vancouver, Canada, to Indian and Swedish parents, she first trained in visual arts at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design before turning to music. She gained attention within Atlanta’s Awful Records collective with the 2015 mixtape World Vision, which established a style blending electronic textures, minimalist beats and a flow that shifts between confrontational rap and melodic passages. Her career later moved toward pop-leaning but still abrasive releases, notably the self-titled album Tommy Genesis (2018) and Goldilocks X (2021), which mix slowed-down trap, R&B influences and industrial sounds. The lyrics, often explicit, tackle sexuality, power, identity and online cultures, contributing to her direct aesthetic. She occasionally collaborates with artists from other alternative scenes — notably Charli XCX — and tours clubs and festivals across North America and Europe, while continuing a visual/image practice shaped by her background as an art student.
