Planningtorock
Born in Bolton, England, Jam Rostron has been developing the Planningtorock project since the mid-2000s, positioned between electropop, experimental pop and club music with often dark, off-kilter contours. Initially released on Rostron’s own label Rostron Records with the EP Eins in 2004, Planningtorock quickly honed a style built on slow or pounding rhythms, thick synth lines, string arrangements and a processed voice that deliberately blurs gendered markers. After Have It All (2006), Planningtorock continued with W (2011) on DFA Records, then the more lyrically direct All Love’s Legal (2014), and Powerhouse (2018), informed by family and personal memories. The project’s trajectory also includes collaborations with The Knife and Mount Sims on the opera Tomorrow, in a Year (2010), remixes for various electronic and pop artists, and compositions for film and fashion. Based in Tallinn after long involvement in Berlin’s and Europe’s electronic scenes, Planningtorock blends dancefloor tension, a pronounced queer stance and highly sculpted production in a single musical vision.
