Nine Inch Nails

Founded in 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio, Nine Inch Nails—led by American musician Trent Reznor—initially situates itself within industrial rock, at the crossroads of industrial metal, alternative rock, and experimental electronics. The first studio album, Pretty Hate Machine (1989), establishes a writing approach that blends abrasive guitars, programmed rhythms, and melodic synthesizers, continued with the EP Broken (1992) and then The Downward Spiral (1994), marked by dense, tightly structured production. The double album The Fragile (1999) heightens the contrasts between ambient passages, detailed electronic textures, and heavier sections, while With Teeth (2005) and Year Zero (2007) steer Nine Inch Nails toward a more direct sound with pronounced electronic influences. Beginning with Ghosts I–IV (2008), the instrumental and atmospheric dimension takes on greater prominence, carried forward on The Slip (2008), Hesitation Marks (2013), then Bad Witch (2018) and the volumes Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts (2020). On stage, Nine Inch Nails appears with a full band and a careful focus on visual design. Since the mid-2010s, British composer Atticus Ross has been credited as an official member, consolidating a studio partnership that began earlier, while the Reznor/Ross duo has in parallel developed a body of soundtrack work that extends the project’s sonic universe.
