Massive Attack
Emerging from Bristol’s sound system scene in the late 1980s, Massive Attack formed around Robert “3D” Del Naja, Grant “Daddy G” Marshall and Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles in the wake of the collective The Wild Bunch. The group made its mark in the early 1990s with a slow, dense blend of hip-hop, soul, dub and electronic music, frequently associated with the rise of British trip hop. The album Blue Lines (1991), followed by Protection (1994) and Mezzanine (1998), gradually established Massive Attack on the international stage; their productions are characterized by restrained tempos, pronounced bass lines, dark textural work and frequent use of guest vocalists, notably from soul, rock or reggae backgrounds. After 100th Window (2003) and Heligoland (2010), Massive Attack continued with variable collaborations, intermediate maxi releases and concerts featuring a highly developed visual aesthetic, while remaining closely tied to Bristol’s musical identity.
