Michael Franti and Spearhead

Born in Oakland and a longtime associate of the San Francisco scene, Michael Franti developed Michael Franti & Spearhead from 1994 after the more frontal projects The Beatnigs and The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, where spoken word, hip-hop, industrial punk and social commentary intersected. With Spearhead, a band formula built around Franti and regular musicians like Carl Young, the sound opens to a looser blend of hip-hop, soul, funk, reggae, folk-rock and pop, while keeping writing oriented toward political, social and intimate questions. The early albums Home (1994) and Chocolate Supa Highway (1997) establish this transition, then Stay Human (2001), Everyone Deserves Music (2003) and Yell Fire! (2006) deepen a roots aesthetic where guitars, reggae groove and sung choruses take more space. Michael Franti & Spearhead then continued this line with All Rebel Rockers (2008), The Sound of Sunshine (2010), All People (2013), SoulRocker (2016), Stay Human, Vol. II (2019), Work Hard & Be Nice (2020), Follow Your Heart (2022) and Big Big Love (2023). Present on rock, reggae, folk circuits and generalist festivals, Michael Franti & Spearhead preserve a hybrid identity, between engaged songwriting, stage energy and hip-hop culture.
