G. Love & Special Sauce
Born in Philadelphia around Garrett Dutton, aka G. Love, the G. Love & Special Sauce project took shape in the early 1990s with a tightened formula mixing laid-back vocals, guitar, harmonica, bass and drums. The trio blends blues, hip-hop, rock, soul and funk in a relaxed register, built on sober grooves and a spoken-sung phrasing that borrows as much from rap as from street blues. After beginnings on the Boston and Cambridge scene, G. Love & Special Sauce released a self-titled debut album in 1994, followed by Coast to Coast Motel in 1995 and Yeah, It’s That Easy in 1997, which marked an expansion of the group’s soul palette. Philadelphonic in 1999 and Electric Mile in 2001 continued this hybridization between alternative rock, Philadelphia soul, folk, light psychedelia and hip-hop rhythms. Over the years, the formation experienced several musician changes around G. Love, while remaining active on stage and in the studio, with Superhero Brother in 2008, Sugar in 2014, Love Saves the Day in 2015 and Philadelphia Mississippi in 2022. In parallel, Garrett Dutton also develops a discography under his own name, without breaking with the identity of G. Love & Special Sauce, which remains attached to a flexible crossing between American traditions and urban writing.
