Yttling Jazz

Centered around Swedish bassist and composer Peter Yttling, Yttling Jazz has been developing in Stockholm a project where the language of jazz intersects with a sensibility drawn from indie pop. Performed by a small acoustic ensemble, Yttling Jazz favors simple melodic themes, clear harmonies and a flexible rhythmic approach that leaves ample room for collective improvisation. The group took shape as an extension of Peter Yttling’s work with the pop trio Peter Bjorn and John and his studio work for the Swedish scene, offering a more instrumental counterpoint to his experience as a producer and songwriter. Both on record and on stage, Yttling Jazz relies on original compositions in which the double bass and the wind instruments are in constant dialogue, in an aesthetic that borrows as much from bop and Scandinavian jazz as from song structures. The recordings released under the name Yttling Jazz document a search for the group sound, with formats ranging from tightly written short pieces to more open developments. Active on the jazz circuits in Sweden and internationally, Yttling Jazz belongs to a generation of ensembles that fuse pop culture, melodic writing and the Nordic jazz tradition.
