Marianas Trench

Formed in the early 2000s in Vancouver, Canada, Marianas Trench is centered on singer-songwriter Josh Ramsay, accompanied by Matt Webb on guitar, Mike Ayley on bass and Ian Casselman on drums. Initially associated with the North American pop-punk scene, the band quickly shifted toward highly melodic pop rock, marked by carefully crafted vocal harmonies and a taste for concept albums. Their debut album, Fix Me, released in 2006 on the Canadian label 604 Records, established the group in the alternative rock landscape, while Masterpiece Theatre (2009) broadened their palette with more ambitious structures and near-orchestral passages. In 2011, Ever After presented a continuous sequence of songs built around a tale-inspired narrative, confirming Marianas Trench’s narrative focus. Astoria (2015) draws on 1980s pop sonorities and the aesthetic of adventure films from that period, whereas Phantoms (2019) explores darker pop tinged with gothic imagery. On stage, Marianas Trench alternates between clubs, mid-size venues and festivals in Canada, the United States and Europe, adapting their studio arrangements to a more direct live format. Their style rests on a blend of rock guitars, pop choruses, quasi-theatrical passages and ballads, with constant attention to backing vocals and dynamic shifts within individual tracks.
