Leïla Martial
Active on the French jazz scene since the 2010s, Leïla Martial develops a vocal practice focused on improvisation, timbre and the exploration of language, situated between contemporary jazz, improvised music and folk influences. Hailing from southwest France, the singer trained at the conservatory and in various jazz workshops before embedding herself in a network of clubs and festivals where her embodied, very free approach to the voice takes center stage. Martial composes for variable formats but regularly returns to the trio, notably with the Baa Box project, which blends melodic writing, polyrhythms and passages approaching chamber music. Her discography notably includes the albums "Dance Floor" (2012), "Baabel" (2016), "Warm Canto" (2019) and "FiL" (2020), where fragmented songs, abstract vocal textures, echoes of traditional music and rock‑tinged atmospheres intersect. Leïla Martial performs alongside musicians from the European jazz and experimental scenes, in contexts ranging from intimate acoustic concerts to more electric formats, while keeping at the heart of her work the idea of the voice as a fully fledged instrument.
