Théo Ceccaldi

Born in Pithiviers in 1986, Théo Ceccaldi trained as a violinist in the classical field before opening his work to contemporary jazz and improvised music. A violinist and violist, Ceccaldi develops a writing in which the heritage of chamber music intersects with free improvisation, with a mobile, often tense approach attentive to timbre and dynamic contrasts. In 2010 he founded the Théo Ceccaldi Trio with his brother Valentin Ceccaldi on cello and guitarist Guillaume Aknine; in this formation the balance between composition and collective freedom is central. The trio notably released Caroussel (2012), Can You Smile? with Joëlle Léandre (2013), and Django (2019). A founding member of the Tricollectif in Orléans, Ceccaldi also performs with several ensembles on the European improvised-music scene, alongside Roberto Negro, Sylvain Darrifourcq, Olivier Benoît within the ONJ, Daniel Erdmann with Velvet Revolution, and Joëlle Léandre. Under his own name he has also issued Petite Moutarde (2015) and Amanda Dakota with the project Freaks (2018). His career was marked by Jazz Migration in 2014 and by a Victoire du Jazz in 2017 in the instrumental revelation category.
