Digital Mystikz

Hailing from South Norwood in south London, Digital Mystikz brings together Mala and Coki around a dubstep approach shaped by the legacy of Jamaican dub, very deep basslines, slow rhythms and minimalist tension. Emerging in the early 2000s in the orbit of Big Apple Records, the duo quickly made their mark with maxis like Pathways / Ugly (2004), Neverland / Stuck (2005), and then Haunted / Anti War Dub and Ancient Memories in 2006, where Digital Mystikz refined a sound that is at once dark, spacious and physical. Alongside Loefah and Sgt Pokes, they helped found the DMZ label and the DMZ club night launched in Brixton in 2005, an important meeting point for the London dubstep scene. Backed from the start by John Peel, the pair developed projects and collaborations with Loefah, Kode9 and the Moritz von Oswald Trio, while Mala and Coki also pursued solo paths. Over the years Digital Mystikz returned with tracks such as Education / Horrid Henry (2010), Marduk / Enter Dimensions (2012) and 2 Much Chat / Coral Reef (2013), extending an aesthetic centered on space, the weight of the low end and a stripped-down compositional approach.
