High On Fire
Formed in Oakland, California, in 1998 around guitarist and vocalist Matt Pike (formerly of Sleep), High On Fire developed a dense heavy metal sound at the crossroads of stoner, sludge and doom, marked by repetitive riffs, a massive tone and an energy often close to thrash. The original trio—Des Kensel on drums and George Rice on bass—laid the project’s foundations with The Art of Self Defense (2000), soon followed by Surrounded by Thieves (2002), which established High On Fire on the North American independent metal scene. With Blessed Black Wings (2005) and Death Is This Communion (2007) the band refined a more structured songwriting approach, balancing fast tempos, heavier passages and dark atmospheres, while changes in the rhythm section gradually altered the group’s dynamics. Snakes for the Divine (2010), De Vermis Mysteriis (2012) and Luminiferous (2015) continued this move toward powerful, direct metal, largely oriented toward live performance in the US and Europe. Electric Messiah (2018) and Cometh the Storm (2024) confirm High On Fire’s continuity, which remains centered on Pike’s saturated guitar and raspy vocals, blending doom culture, classic heavy heritage and contemporary sonics.
