The Sword
Formed in Austin, Texas, in the early 2000s, The Sword established itself in the American heavy metal and stoner scenes by combining heavy riffs, mid-tempo grooves and themes drawn from fantasy, mythology and science fiction. Around guitarist and vocalist J.D. Cronise, Kyle Shutt (guitar), Bryan Richie (bass) and Trivett Wingo (drums) coalesced quickly; this lineup released the debut studio album "Age of Winters" in 2006, which bore a doom-adjacent aesthetic and a sound influenced by 1970s heavy metal. With "Gods of the Earth" (2008) The Sword extended this approach, sharpening the edge and developing more epic narratives, before shifting in 2010 toward a more narrative, classic-rock direction with the sci‑fi concept album "Warp Riders." Drummer changes around the turn of the 2010s, including the arrival of Santiago Vela III, accompanied a gradual move toward a broader palette that embraced hard rock and psychedelic influences on "Apocryphon" (2012), "High Country" (2015) and "Used Future" (2018). The band also toured extensively, often opening for major metal acts, and made a name on international festival stages. Their trajectory was later documented through live releases and retrospective compilations that frame the stylistic arc from stoner/doom beginnings to a more melodic, rock-oriented songwriting.
