Juan Atkins

Rooted in Detroit’s scene, Juan Atkins is an American producer and DJ associated with the rise of techno and electro in the early 1980s. After growing up in Belleville, Michigan, he first gained notice with the duo Cybotron, founded with Rik Davis, which blended electronic funk, new wave influences and science‑fiction themes. From 1985 he developed his solo project Model 500, releasing a series of maxi singles on his Metroplex label that helped shape the Detroit techno sound with repetitive rhythms, synthetic basslines and a futuristic approach to melody. Often regarded as part of the core group of DJs sometimes called the “Belleville Three” alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins alternates solo productions, multiple aliases such as Infiniti, and DJ sets at clubs and international festivals. His recorded work notably includes the albums “Deep Space” (1995) and “Mind and Body” (1999) as Model 500, as well as the “Borderland” project launched in 2013 with Moritz von Oswald, where he explores more stretched, atmospheric forms of techno and electronic dub.
