Basic Channel

Born in Berlin in 1993 around Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, Basic Channel established itself both as a duo and as a label, in the wake of the 1990s German techno scene and the environment shaped by Hard Wax and later Dubplates & Mastering. Basic Channel develops music at the junction of minimal techno, ambient techno and dub, with stripped-down structures, deep bass, repetitive loops, and a pronounced focus on echo and space. The early maxis released between 1993 and 1994, under their name or under aliases such as Cyrus and Quadrant, laid the foundations for this aesthetic, later gathered on BCD in 1995 and then BCD-2 in 2008. In parallel, Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus extended this language under other signatures, notably Maurizio and Rhythm & Sound, while launching ventures such as Chain Reaction and Main Street. With Rhythm & Sound, Basic Channel shifted its approach toward a more direct dialogue with Jamaican dub, notably in collaboration with Paul St. Hilaire. The history of Basic Channel remains tied to a sober, slow, immersive form of techno, conceived as much for the club as for attentive listening.
