Moritz von Oswald
Born in Hamburg in 1962 and based in Berlin, Moritz von Oswald trained as a classical percussionist at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg before joining the German new wave group Palais Schaumburg in the 1980s. After that period he turned to electronic music in Berlin, became involved with the Tresor scene and developed a style built on spare rhythms, dub textures and a minimal approach to techno. In 1993 he co-founded the Basic Channel label and project with Mark Ernestus, and continued this work in various forms associated with the dub-techno aesthetic, notably Rhythm & Sound. His discography also includes collaborations with Thomas Fehlmann from the early 1990s, then with Carl Craig on Recomposed (2008), Nils Petter Molvær on 1/1 (2013) and with Juan Atkins as part of Borderland, releasing Borderland (2013) and Transport (2016). At the same time Moritz von Oswald leads the Moritz von Oswald Trio with Max Loderbauer, initially joined by Vladislav Delay and later by Tony Allen, on Vertical Ascent (2009), Horizontal Structures (2011), Fetch (2012) and Sounding Lines (2015).
