Underground Resistance

Born in Detroit in the late 1980s, Underground Resistance coalesced around Mike Banks, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood as both a collective and an independent label. It sits at the heart of Detroit techno, delivering a direct, physical and futuristic sound informed by electro, acid, industrial textures and a pronounced sense of mechanical groove. From the early 1990s the project asserted a distinctive visual and political identity—often anonymous—linking club culture, production autonomy and an Afrofuturist imagination. After Jeff Mills and later Robert Hood left to pursue solo careers, Mike Banks remained the central figure of Underground Resistance, which continued to evolve through several formations and associated projects such as Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Interstellar Fugitives. The project’s trajectory has been shaped more by maxi singles, collective series and satellite projects than by the album format, maintaining a constant presence across techno, electro and experimental scenes. On stage Underground Resistance alternates between DJ sets, live performances and variable line-ups, balancing rhythmic tension, funk-infused bass and jazz-tinged openings.
