Dave Lee

Active in the London club scene since the late 1980s, Dave Lee has established himself as a British producer, remixer and DJ at the intersection of house, disco and soul. For many years he worked under the alias Joey Negro, developing a style rooted in the disco and boogie legacy — combining funk basslines, soulful vocal arrangements and house structures geared toward the dancefloor. In 1990 he launched the label Z Records, which became the main outlet for his own productions, numerous aliases and collective projects such as The Sunburst Band, where he further explored the intersection of live instrumentation and electronic production. The 1993 album Universe of Love marked an early synthesis of his producer’s approach, while Produced With Love (2017) reaffirmed the continuity of his work around disco songwriting and formats close to modern soul. Under both Dave Lee and Joey Negro his output ranges from original compositions to extensive remix series of 1970s and 1980s disco and soul repertoires, as well as substantial editing and reissue activity via Z Records, linking him to contemporary clubs and fans of retro dance music. Around the turn of the 2020s he increasingly credited his productions to his given name while maintaining the aesthetic built around Joey Negro.
