Amadou et Mariam

The Malian duo Amadou and Mariam brings together guitarist‑singer Amadou Bagayoko, who emerged from Bamako's scene, and singer Mariam Doumbia; they met in the 1980s at the Institute for Blind Youth in the capital, where they began composing and performing together. Gradually based between Bamako and Paris, Amadou and Mariam developed a sound that mixes mandingue rhythms, Sahelian blues, pop and rock, driven by melodic guitars, simple backing vocals and lyrics in Bambara and French inspired by urban life, family and the movements between Africa and Europe. After several releases in West Africa, the pair attracted international attention with the albums “Sou ni tilé” (1998) and “Tje ni mousso” (1999), and broadened their audience with “Wati” (2002). The collaboration with Manu Chao on “Dimanche à Bamako” (2004) was a major milestone, opening their music to a wider public and new tours in Europe and North America. The records “Welcome to Mali” (2008), “Folila” (2012) and “La Confusion” (2017) continued this trajectory by combining West African musicians, international pop and subtle electronic touches, while preserving the voice‑and‑guitar core that defines Amadou and Mariam’s sonic identity on stage and in the studio.
