Frànçois & the Atlas Mountains

Straddling the French independent scene and Bristol’s DIY networks, Frànçois & the Atlas Mountains has been crafting a hybrid pop since the mid-2000s, led by French singer and songwriter François Marry, originally from Saintes. Formed in Bristol around Marry with both British and French musicians, the band moves between indie pop, African influences, discreet electronic touches, and the legacy of francophone chanson, with lyrics in both French and English. After a debut album, The People To Forget in 2006, Frànçois & the Atlas Mountains drew attention with Plaine Inondable in 2009, then joined the Domino label for E Volo Love in 2012 and Piano Ombre in 2014, which confirmed a writing style blending pop melodies, supple rhythms, and sometimes minimalist arrangements. Based between France and the United Kingdom, François Marry carried the project forward with Solide Mirage in 2017 and Banane Bleue in 2021, while maintaining a flexible live lineup. Frànçois & the Atlas Mountains thus occupies a space where anglophone pop culture, intimate songs, and inspirations drawn from travel and collaborations intersect, notably with the Scottish band Camera Obscura.
