Laurel Halo
Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Laurel Halo has been developing since the late 2000s a practice that moves between electronic music, ambient, avant-pop, experimental composition and oblique techno. After early EPs released in 2010 and 2011 — including King Felix and Hour Logic — she made a breakthrough with Quarantine in 2012 and expanded that approach on Chance of Rain in 2013, where rhythmic structures became more abstract and club-oriented without losing their atmospheric quality. Living successively in New York, Berlin and then Los Angeles, Laurel Halo steered her music toward more open, instrumental and textural forms, as on In Situ (2015), Dust (2017) and Raw Silk Uncut Wood (2018), in dialogue with scenes that intersect experimentation, improvisation and dance music. Her work also includes film scores, notably Possessed (2020), collaborations with Hodge, Julia Holter, Eli Keszler, John Cale and the Moritz von Oswald Trio on Dissent (2021), as well as regular activity as a DJ and curator. With Atlas (2023) and Octavia (2024), Laurel Halo continues a compositional voice that mixes piano, electronic washes, discreet pulses and a marked attention to sonic space.
