Lawrence English

Born in Brisbane, Queensland, Lawrence English has since the early 2000s developed work situated between ambient music, drone, electroacoustic composition and sound art. His approach relies as much on instrumental textures as on field recordings, with a constant attention paid to space, listening and perception. Founder of the Room40 label in 2000, Lawrence English has also played the role of curator in Australian and international experimental scenes, circulating works related to minimalism, noise, ambient and contemporary sound forms. His solo discography includes Transit (2004), Kiri No Oto (2008), A Colour for Autumn (2009), Wilderness of Mirrors (2014), Cruel Optimism (2017), Lassitude (2020) and Even the Horizon Knows Its Bounds (2025). In parallel, Lawrence English has multiplied collaborations with artists from the experimental and electronic spheres, among them William Basinski on Selva Oscura (2018), Alessandro Cortini on Immediate Horizon (2018), Merzbow on Eternal Stalker (2022) and Loscil on Colours of Air (2023). He also leads the Hexa project with Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu. On stage as on record, Lawrence English builds slow, dense or almost motionless pieces, where masses of sound, resonances and variations in dynamics occupy a central place.
