Carlos Vives

Born in Santa Marta on Colombia’s Caribbean coast in 1961, Carlos Vives first trained as a telenovela actor in Bogotá before simultaneously developing a career as a Spanish-language pop-rock singer. His early albums, from Por fuera y por dentro (1986) to Al centro de la ciudad (1989), fall within a romantic pop vein, after which Vives moved closer to traditional repertoire with the TV series Escalona, whose songs he recorded in 1991 and 1992. With Clásicos de la provincia (1993) and La tierra del olvido (1995), he defined a personal approach to vallenato by blending acoustic instruments, Caribbean rhythms, cumbia, rock, and pop, leading him to perform across Latin America and the United States. He continued along this path with Tengo fe (1997), El amor de mi tierra (1999), and Déjame entrar (2001), then explored a more electric, urban sound on El rock de mi pueblo (2004) and Corazón profundo (2013). In the 2010s, collaborations with Shakira and Marc Anthony further broadened his international audience, while the albums Vives (2017) and Cumbiana (2020) extended his work around the musical traditions of Colombia’s Caribbean coast.
