Cancer Bats
Formed in 2004 on Toronto’s hardcore scene in Canada, Cancer Bats coalesced around vocalist Liam Cormier and guitarist Scott Middleton, later stabilizing with Mike Peters on drums and Jaye R. Schwarzer on bass, before the lineup evolved over the years. The band developed a direct hybrid of hardcore punk, metal, sludge metal and Southern rock influences, built on heavy riffs, fast tempos and shouted vocals, sometimes bordering on screams. Cancer Bats gained attention with the album Birthing the Giant in 2006, followed by Hail Destroyer in 2008, which further cemented the blend of punk energy and heavy tones. The releases Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones (2010) and Dead Set on Living (2012) extended this approach with a denser sound, while Searching for Zero (2015) and The Spark That Moves (2018) emphasized the contrasts between aggressive passages and more rock‑oriented moments. In 2022, Cancer Bats released Psychic Jailbreak amid lineup changes, while maintaining a strong presence on the road — from small venues to metal and punk festivals — and simultaneously developing the Bat Sabbath covers project focused on the Black Sabbath catalogue.
